Safety boundary: If you smell gas, stop, leave the building and contact emergency services or the fuel supplier from a safe location.
Confirm the control path
Check the wall switch or remote mode, thermostat setpoint if equipped and batteries in the remote receiver. Verify the appliance service switch has not been turned off.
Observe the sequence
Note whether there is a pilot, spark, brief flame or immediate shutdown. Photograph any error indication.
Do not rearrange the firebox
Logs, embers and glass must remain in the approved positions. Moving them to 'improve' flame appearance can create soot or unsafe combustion.
Call for service
Repeated pilot failure, soot, delayed ignition, unusual odour, damaged glass or vent concerns require qualified service.
