Gas Fireplace Basics

Direct-vent, natural-draft and decorative gas fireplaces explained at a homeowner level.

Safety boundary: Do not alter logs, glass, venting, pilot assemblies or safety switches. Gas fireplace service is not a DIY task.

The appliance and vent are a system

Many modern units use sealed direct venting that brings combustion air from outdoors and exhausts outside. Older designs may rely on a chimney or room air.

The glass is functional

Glass fronts, gaskets and log placement can affect combustion and safety. Operate only with components installed as specified.

Controls

Millivolt, electronic ignition, remotes and wall switches differ. Batteries may support some controls, but a unit should not be repeatedly restarted when it faults.

Routine care

Keep the area clear, inspect visible vent terminations and arrange periodic professional cleaning and safety checks according to the manufacturer.

Useful questions to record

  • Does the issue involve controls, ignition, soot, odour or glass?
  • Has the unit been inspected recently?
