Electric Fireplaces

What electric fireplaces can and cannot do as heaters and decorative appliances.

Safety boundary: Follow circuit, clearance and mounting instructions. Stop using a unit with hot plugs, damaged cords or repeated breaker trips.

Decorative flame and resistance heat

Most electric fireplaces use lighting or projection for the flame effect and an electric resistance heater for warmth. The visual effect may operate without heat.

Heating limits

A plug-in unit is generally a zone heater, not a whole-home heating system. Output is constrained by the branch circuit.

Built-in and insert models

Wall-mounted, recessed and mantel units have different ventilation and enclosure requirements. Never cover required air openings.

Buying considerations

Check certification for Canada, installation method, circuit requirements, controls, noise and access for service.
