Safety boundary: Use a properly grounded outlet, follow window-support instructions and never use undersized extension cords.
Window and through-wall units
These reject heat directly outdoors and can be effective for a room when correctly sized and sealed. Through-wall units require a sleeve designed for that model type.
Portable units
A portable air conditioner still needs to exhaust heat outdoors. Single-hose designs can depressurize a room and pull warm air in through leaks; dual-hose designs reduce that effect.
Sizing
An oversized room unit may cycle quickly without controlling humidity. Sun exposure, ceiling height, kitchen heat and room openness affect capacity needs.
Condensate and maintenance
Some units evaporate much of their condensate; others need drainage. Clean filters and coils as directed, and ensure exhaust hoses are not crushed.
Useful questions to record
- Is airflow weak, warm, intermittent or normal?
- Is the outdoor unit operating?
- Is there ice or water around the indoor equipment?
