Air Conditioner or Heat Pump Not Cooling

A safe troubleshooting sequence for weak airflow, warm air, icing and outdoor-unit problems.

Safety boundary: Turn the system off and arrange service for burning odours, electrical arcing, repeated breaker trips or heavily iced equipment.

Separate airflow from refrigeration

Little air from registers points toward filter, blower, duct or coil icing issues. Normal airflow that is not cool may involve controls, outdoor equipment or the refrigerant circuit.

Check the basics

Confirm cooling mode, setpoint, clean filter, open registers and that the outdoor disconnect has not been intentionally turned off. Keep vegetation and stored items away from the outdoor unit.

  • Read the appliance manual and note model-specific warnings.
  • Take photos or notes from a safe position.
  • Stop when a panel, fuel line, refrigerant circuit or fixed wiring would need to be opened.

Icing

Ice is a symptom, not something to scrape away. Turn cooling off, allow the blower to run if safe and arrange diagnosis. Restricted airflow and refrigerant problems are common categories.

Record conditions

Note indoor and outdoor temperature, thermostat settings, runtime, water leakage, sounds and whether the outdoor fan operates. This helps service staff prepare.

  • Is airflow weak, warm, intermittent or normal?
  • Is the outdoor unit operating?
  • Is there ice or water around the indoor equipment?
