Oversizing is not extra safety
A furnace that is too large may satisfy the thermostat quickly and shut off before rooms warm evenly. Short cycles can increase temperature swings, noise and wear, and may not allow filters or humidifiers to work as intended.
Undersizing has a different pattern
A genuinely undersized system may run for long periods and still lose ground during design-cold weather. Similar symptoms can also come from poor insulation, duct leakage, restricted airflow or an incorrect thermostat location.
What a proper calculation considers
A contractor should account for climate, exposed surfaces, insulation, windows, air leakage, orientation, additions and ventilation. Duct capacity also matters: a furnace cannot perform properly when the air distribution system cannot carry its required airflow.
Questions for an estimate
Ask for the calculated heat loss, proposed output capacity, blower airflow, expected temperature rise and any duct changes. A clear explanation is more reassuring than a larger model.

- Does the issue affect airflow, heat production or both?
- Is there an error code, odour, leak or repeated shutdown?
