The filter protects equipment first
A central filter catches particles before they coat the blower, heat exchanger or cooling coil. Better filtration may improve particle removal, but performance depends on fit, airflow and continuous fan operation.
MERV is not a universal upgrade path
A higher MERV rating generally captures smaller particles, but pressure drop varies by filter design and size. A deep media cabinet can often provide better filtration with less resistance than a thin, dense one-inch filter.
Replacement timing
Calendar rules are only starting points. Inspect filters more often during renovations, wildfire smoke, heavy pet shedding or continuous fan use. Replace when visibly loaded or when the manufacturer or measured pressure drop indicates.
Fit and direction
Use the size specified for the rack or cabinet. The airflow arrow points toward the furnace or air handler. Gaps around the filter allow bypass and reduce the value of buying a better filter.

- Is there an error code, odour, leak or repeated shutdown?
