Safety boundary: Fuel odour, burning electrical smells, smoke, visible scorching or carbon-monoxide alarms require urgent action.
Startup and airflow sounds
A brief inducer sound, ignition, burner operation and blower ramp can be normal. New rattles, scraping, grinding or repeated ignition attempts are not.
Duct noises
Popping may come from metal expansion or pressure changes. Whistling can indicate a restricted filter, closed registers or undersized return path. The sound location and timing are valuable clues.
Dust versus electrical odours
A mild dusty smell at first seasonal startup may clear quickly. A persistent hot-plastic, rubber or electrical smell should not be treated as normal.
Document the pattern
Record whether the sound starts before flame, with the blower, only on high stage or at shutdown. Video from a safe distance can help service staff.
Useful questions to record
- What changed immediately before the problem?
- Does the issue affect airflow, heat production or both?
- Is there an error code, odour, leak or repeated shutdown?
