How hydronic heat moves
A boiler heats water that circulates through radiators, baseboards, fan coils or floor tubing. Steam systems operate differently and require steam-specific knowledge.
Controls and zones
Thermostats may operate zone valves or pumps. Outdoor-reset controls can adjust water temperature with weather. Air in the system, failed circulation or control faults can cause cold zones.
Maintenance priorities
Venting, combustion, pressure controls, expansion tanks, relief valves, pumps and water quality all matter. Homeowners should not operate relief valves or add chemicals without system-specific guidance.
Replacement questions
Ask whether the proposed boiler is compatible with existing emitters, required water temperature, chimney or sidewall venting and domestic hot-water arrangements.
- What changed immediately before the problem?
- Does the issue affect airflow, heat production or both?
- Is there an error code, odour, leak or repeated shutdown?
